Build a county by solving local shortages

You are a noble steward turning undeveloped land into a network of medieval settlements. Choose where each village belongs, give it an industry and connect it to neighbors that need its output. Supplying food and equipment lets a settlement grow, opening capacity for the next workshop. The useful planning question is what the whole county needs next, rather than how to fill every plot in one city.

The road and river are part of the production chain

Terrain and resources guide the choice of settlement sites. Roads connect market squares so vendors can distribute goods within a region; regional trade needs the appropriate markets or raft ports. In the demo, rafts travel downstream and heavy goods such as logs and stone need river transport. A productive village in the wrong place can therefore leave another village short of materials.

Mayors add another choice: their bonuses can suit different local industries, while noble-house influence and cultures shape the wider region. This may appeal to players who enjoy matching production chains to geography and watching several small settlements support one another.

A useful first route through the demo

The developer’s October 16 FAQ suggests checking resources and river direction before founding the tutorial settlement. Establish food and wood supplies, provide construction and maintenance through a Carpenters’ Guild, then meet equipment needs to open building slots. Before adding another industry, check that roads connect the market squares and that its destination actually needs the output.

What is available on October 24

The replacement free demo launched October 15. It covers one map, settlement levels up to 2 and the Commoner class. Demo update 0.1.10 arrived October 20 with longer bridges and fixes. Early Access remains planned for November 5, 2026; its additional settlement levels and industries are future content, not the present demo.

The October 16 FAQ says saves from the earlier Steam Next Fest demo are incompatible with this replacement. The developer says progress from the replacement demo will carry into the purchased game. Steam currently offers the demo on the main listing and lists Windows, Linux, and Simplified Chinese interface/subtitle support.

What a County of Fortune wiki could cover

Settlement needs, production dependencies, road connections and the limits of downstream trade would make useful reference topics. The +1 vote below records interest in that coverage; it does not announce a new wiki.
