Endings

The picture shown on the game-over screen

A run of the demo can end eleven ways, and only one of them is a win. Every ending opens the same game-over panel: this picture, the ending’s title, and a short epilogue about what became of you and the shop. This page uses the game’s own titles and spoils every ending.

It covers the demo, build 049-Rev3-L. The triggers are the ones the game’s code contains; not every ending has been played through to its screen in a save.

Ending What triggers it How to stay clear
Buyout Making the last weekly payment on the loan shark’s mortgage This is the win, and the only screen that lets you keep playing.
You Defaulted On Your Rent Not having the rent when the Landlord collects Keep the week’s rent aside. Rent Grace from Joe Wild covers one missed week.
Repossession Missing a mortgage payment when the loan shark finds nothing left worth taking Take the mortgage only if you can meet every weekly payment.
Arrested Refusing a Security fine or not being able to pay it, an arrest sentence, or an inspection that finds too much Pay the fine, and keep the evidence against you low.
Executed An investigation that ends in a sentence for capital crimes Slow or clear the investigation before it completes.
Framed Security standing at −100 Stay above −100 with Security.
Lynched Lower Levels standing at −100 Stay above −100 with the Lower Levels.
Bombed Revolution standing at −100 Stay above −100 with the Revolution.
Retired Cartel standing at −100, handing over no Dream Dust at a collection, or handing over dust far below the purity asked Deliver something every week, at close to the purity asked.
Sentinel Collapse Going too long without Immunivax, with the Sentinel Collapse Disorder perk Never let seven nights pass without a genuine Immunivax.
Augmented Letting too many augs walk away, in Hard Mode only Scan suspicious customers and deal with confirmed augs.

Defaulting on the rent is the ending most runs meet first. The epilogue has you evicted and abandoned by your customers, your contact and even the Mentor, back to scavenging while someone new rents the shop. The Landlord explains the weekly rent and Rent Grace.

The other two money endings belong to the loan shark’s mortgage, which the same page describes. He comes back every week and asks for the payment:

  • Pay, and he leaves until next week. On the last payment he says the store is yours for good, and you get Buyout.
  • Don’t pay, and he takes goods instead. When he finds nothing worth taking, he seizes the store, and you get Repossession.

Both come from the case Security builds against you, and Security and Contraband, inspections & raids explain how that case grows and how to slow it.

  • Arrested has three routes: an officer offers a fine and you refuse it or cannot pay it, an investigation ends in an arrest sentence, or an inspection ends in arrest for what it found. You are jailed, the shop is leased to someone else, and you go back to scavenging.
  • Executed is the sentence for capital crimes. The epilogue says your customers soon forgot you.

Four factions keep a final penalty at −100 standing. The next time you raise the shutter the consequence is already waiting, and its dialogue offers no choices.

  • Lower Levels, Mob Justice: a mob arrives to “get rid of you once and for all”. They take everything and throw you out of the airlock: Lynched.
  • Security, By Any Means: officers arrest you “for your crimes against the station”, whatever the evidence says. The store is seized and sold to pay a fine: Framed.
  • Revolution, Hit list: nobody comes to the counter. An armed Plastic Explosive is planted in your shop, a countdown plays, and it goes off a few seconds later: Bombed.
  • Cartel, Forced Retirement: a gunman is waiting: Retired.

The Cartel reaches the same ending at its weekly collection if you put no Dream Dust on the counter, or dust so far below the purity asked that the handler calls it a scam. Dust only a little under the mark is accepted with a warning.

Each faction page lists what raises and lowers its standing. The Black Market and the Upper Levels have no penalty this deep in the demo.

Only a shopkeeper who took the Sentinel Collapse Disorder perk can end this way. The game counts the nights since your last injection, and from the seventh night on each night does lasting harm:

Nights since the last injection The night log says Harm that night
6 You are starting to feel a bit off. none
7 to 9 You feel feverish and weak. 1
10 to 13 You struggle to breathe. 2
14 or more Your whole body feels like it’s turning against you. 3

The harm adds up and never heals, and at 20 the run ends. The log warns you again when the total passes 10 and 15. Left untreated from a fresh injection, the sixteenth night is the last.

  • A genuine Immunivax Injector sets the count back to zero.
  • An expired one leaves the count at 3, and a counterfeit at 3 or more. Immunivax injectors shows how to tell them apart.
  • A strictly weekly injection is one night late. The seventh night already costs 1, so inject before it.

Missed augs fill a meter, and in Hard Mode a full meter ends the run: a group of augs breaks in at night and installs a chip in you. Augs & the rogue AI covers the scanner, the meter and what counts as a miss.

The game’s text holds three more epilogues, but nothing in the demo triggers them.

  • Assassinated: a hitman hired by the Upper Levels after “one too many offences”. The demo gives the Upper Levels no penalty at −100, so he is never sent.
  • No Permit: closing because you could not get a vendor permit. Refusing the Trade Board Official’s permit gets you reported to Security instead, so it ends as a fine, an arrest or an execution.
  • Buyout without the loan shark: a second Buyout epilogue, where signing the deed frees you from the Landlord rather than the lender. The demo only reaches Buyout through the mortgage.
