Installation & troubleshooting

These community mods are separate downloads for the game. Installing Probably Stolen through Steam does not install them. Start with one mod and a separate test run, and keep an untouched copy of the save you want to protect.
This guide covers preparing for mods and diagnosing problems. The Mods directory records author links, file labels and build-specific caveats. Required loader versions vary from mod to mod.
The October 21 announcement plans the full release for October 28, 2026. Steam Workshop support, a modding API and mod localization are announced for 1.0, not features of the current demo. Demo saves are compatible, but the developers strongly recommend starting a new game to avoid potential bugs. The demo will no longer be available after release, and demo mods are likely not compatible with the full game.
Before downloading
Section titled “Before downloading”- Identify your game build. Compare it with the author’s Description, Files and Posts tabs. A recent upload, endorsement count or matching mod name is not compatibility evidence. This wiki’s game data and an author’s tested build may come from different builds; use the directory for the recorded distinction.
- Read the exact file’s requirements and update notes. Start from the linked author page and the official MelonLoader project. Follow the installation instructions for that mod and loader combination, including any runtime requirement the author names. Do not substitute a universal loader version or a guessed folder path.
- Back up outside the mod’s own backup feature. Preserve your existing save and any separate mod data before installing, updating, importing or removing a mod. More Features’ backups omit other mods’ separate data; Module Assembler’s backups cover disk saves, not unsaved progress.
- Choose a test you can reverse safely. Use a separate run and add one mod at a time. Starting-perk mods need a new run. Keep your original backup unchanged while testing.
For deciding what to install, compare More game content and Enhancements. They are not a compatibility-tested mod pack.
Install and verify one mod
Section titled “Install and verify one mod”Follow the author’s download and placement instructions, then start the game and check the feature you actually wanted. Record the game build, loader version, downloaded filename and enabled settings. If the author tells you to replace an old DLL, remove that old copy from the loading location rather than retaining both releases there.
First check the smallest visible behavior: a settings panel, a storage color or a new perk in a new run. For stock-moving tools, use expendable test stock and review what moved. For capacity, output or survival changes, inspect the test run before continuing an important save. A successful launch alone does not establish that every feature, save migration or mod combination is safe.
Only add the next mod after that individual test. If a problem starts after a new addition, you then have a much smaller combination to investigate.
What Mod Manager does
Section titled “What Mod Manager does”Nico’s Mod Manager is an in-game panel for mod toggles, hotkeys and supported settings, with Chinese and English UI. It helps manage supported configuration; it is not evidence that all installed mods are compatible.
Apply configuration or hotkey edits in the panel, and restart the game after enabling or disabling DLLs. A disabled toggle does not mean the running game has unloaded the mod, and neither disabling nor deleting a DLL guarantees that saved changes are undone.
The author page body and Files/changelog labels have differed. The directory keeps the dated label comparison and author-reported configuration-save improvements; check the current Files and changelog before choosing a package.
Mod Manager 1.2.9
Section titled “Mod Manager 1.2.9”The author’s changelog lists version 1.2.9, updated October 22, 2026. It says this version fixes settings matching for DLL filenames with a Chinese display prefix and a version suffix: the manager removes the display prefix before matching the assembly name, restoring hotkey, boolean and numeric settings under the right mod. Check the author’s supported game build before using it.
Installation-info collection
Section titled “Installation-info collection”The author’s 1.2.6 changelog says the Collect Mod installation info option is on by default. When enabled, it reports names of Melon Mods found in the game’s Mods/ folder, including Disabled/; it excludes plugins, dependencies and files outside those folders. The author describes the online details as including mod names, Chinese and English descriptions and links, with public aggregate statistics. Turning collection off is saved immediately, cancels online sync, deletes the detail cache and clears displayed online details. Turning it on again starts a fresh sync.
When something does not work
Section titled “When something does not work”The mod loads but a feature seems inactive
Section titled “The mod loads but a feature seems inactive”Check the feature’s prerequisites before reinstalling. New starting perks need a new run. Convenience Module’s water details require an
AquaScan, and its click-to-advance dialogue needs automatic dialogue advancement off. Mod Manager DLL toggles require a restart. Check hotkeys and supported settings against the author’s instructions.
Module Assembler shows a module but cannot use it
Section titled “Module Assembler shows a module but cannot use it”The author’s changelog, rechecked October 13, says modules in an undecrypted locked crate can be displayed but cannot be used for assembly. Decrypt the crate before using its modules; seeing them in the planner does not make them available.
Module Assembler loses a hotkey edit
Section titled “Module Assembler loses a hotkey edit”The same author notes say switching tabs in the Hotkeys editor discards unsaved edits. Save the changes before switching tabs. Both behaviors are as the author describes them.
The game crashes after adding or updating a mod
Section titled “The game crashes after adding or updating a mod”Keep the original save and backup intact. Return to the separate test run, follow the author’s disabling instructions and test the newly changed mod on its own before rebuilding the combination. Record whether the problem occurs at startup, opening a panel, moving an item or loading a save.
Read the directory’s dated conflict notes, then the author’s latest Posts and Bugs tabs. A reported fix for one startup conflict does not establish that an unrelated machine or save issue is repaired. Likewise, a bug report’s status label is not a successful compatibility test.
Items, capacity or saved data look wrong
Section titled “Items, capacity or saved data look wrong”Stop before overwriting the affected save. More Features warns about older-save equipment levels, persistent custom perks and incomplete coverage of other mods’ data. QuickTrade moves real items, and Module Assembler applies real layouts. Removing their DLLs is not an undo operation. Use the preserved backup and the author’s recovery guidance; do not assume another update will repair a bad import.
Ask for help with useful evidence
Section titled “Ask for help with useful evidence”Report the exact game build, loader and mod file versions, the smallest tested mod combination, reproduction steps and whether the save predates the change. Say what you expected and what happened. This is more useful than saying only that the latest version crashes.
Review logs, screenshots and any diagnostic archive before sharing. Module Assembler’s optional ZIP can include disk saves, logs, a limited action history, display/language details and a DLL hash; it does not upload automatically or include unsaved progress. Share only what you intend the recipient to see.
Use game update history for game releases and the Mods directory for mod releases and compatibility notes. Neither is a promise that an older save or an untested combination will work.
