Spear build: shielded control flank

Battle Brothers cover art

Spears trade damage for reliable hits and control. Use one to steady a weak flank, interrupt an approach, or protect a stronger attacker; Spearwall cannot guarantee a stop and will not match a dedicated damage build against heavy armor.

Fighting Spear

Choose a recruit with useful melee defense and enough fatigue to raise a shield repeatedly. The spear’s hit bonus helps, but a shield does not make Spearwall more reliable; it can still fail against a high-defense target when melee attack is low. Raise melee defense on most level-ups, then health and resolve; add fatigue if repeated shieldwall and Spearwall drain the recruit. Wear medium armor early and move to Nimble gear later. Equip a spear and shield; carry a spare shield only if the battle may wear one out. This build’s job is control rather than armor damage.

Equip a militia or fighting spear and a sturdy shield. An ordinary Spearwall activation costs 4 AP and 30 fatigue; Spear Mastery lowers its fatigue cost to 23, keeps the wall active after an enemy breaches it, and lets the brother raise it again while in a Zone of Control. Reactivation still costs AP and fatigue, so do not renew the wall automatically. Brace a threatened lane, then use Shieldwall when enemies close. Do not stack Indomitable and Spearwall every turn without tracking fatigue; use Recover when the line is stable. Some enemies ignore zone control, and a low-attack recruit will not reliably stop high-defense enemies. Compare the weapon reference and combat guide.

Put the spearman on an exposed flank or gap where an enemy has a clear approach. If a foe reaches the line, use the shield and let nearby damage dealers handle it. Keep an escape space behind the brother so an ally can Rotate him out if fatigue or morale runs low; walking away from an adjacent enemy can draw a free attack.
